Chaga is unique amongst medicinal fungi; along with Agaricus blazei it does not appear to have any significant history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Chaga does have a long history of use in the traditional herbal practices of Russia, Poland and the Baltic countries, and is reputedly the mushroom Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn wrote about in his book “Cancer Ward.”
In a 1999 study on the immuno-modulating properties of the polysaccharides extracted from Chaga, the authors noted that “in a rural district of Alexandroff county” the records show very few people suffering from serious health problems, “and the reason is assumed to be that a custom of drinking a decoction of Chaga is popular to cut down on living expenses for black tea.”* (1)
